To the UCOR Workforce:
I’ve always been impressed with the innovative approaches UCOR has used to ensure work is completed efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively. It started at the beginning of UCOR’s first contract with the waste factory method—employing a waste hauling and transportation system to immediately dispose of demolition debris rather than let it pile up in the field.
I was recently reminded of UCOR’s focus on innovation with the deployment of a special device on our robotic equipment that allows for quicker cleanup inside the ORNL’s 3026 hot cell. It’s a simple attachment that operates like a dustpan—allowing debris to be scooped up rather than removed one piece at a time. This simple innovation has helped to accelerate cleanup inside the cell with more efficient debris removal. I applaud the UCOR operators who questioned whether there was a better way to clear the debris from the hot cell and developed this device along with our mechanics. This is yet another example of how UCOR saves taxpayer dollars by advancing schedules and finishing projects more quickly while continuing to adhere to our principle that safety is always the first consideration in any work we do.
I encourage everyone to continue thinking of better ways to do things. It doesn’t just have to be in the field. We’ve seen innovative approaches deployed among our functional workforce as well—from using the Joulix AI tool to supplement our processes to consolidating our business systems under Project Paragon.
If you identify something that you think can be done better in a different way, I encourage you to talk with your supervisor. All ideas are welcome. Keep coming up with those innovative approaches as we set the standard for investment-worthiness across the DOE Complex.
