An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a sophisticated yet easy-to-use portable medical device. It analyzes the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.
AEDs provide audio prompts for each step in the resuscitation process and voice prompts during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to let the user know if chest compressions are the correct speed and depth.
Each minute that passes without emergency medical intervention after sudden cardiac arrest decreases a person’s survival rate by 10%. Knowing where to find an AED in your work area is important. Locations of the 171 AED units at UCOR can be found on the UCOR Hub by going to Safety, Safety and Health Programs, Files, AED Locations.
Module 32290, Adult First Aid, CPR & AED, is available to the entire UCOR workforce. Talk to your supervisor or training point of contact if you would like to take the class. Information regarding the UCOR AED Program can be found in PROC-MD-8564, Automated External Defibrillators.
