Environmental Program and Stewardship teams emphasize safe driving

UCOR’s Environmental Programs and Stewardship teams continue to keep vehicle safety as a primary focus after a vehicle safety challenge was conducted over the summer.

The focus of the summer challenge, led by the LSIT, was to promote vehicle safety and avoid vehicle incidences. For incentive, Environmental Programs leadership created a point system, giving credit to the Environmental Program teams for proactive activities around vehicle safety.

Teams under Environmental Programs include Environmental Compliance, Environmental Services, and End State Planning.

The Environmental Services and End State Planning teams won the challenge by identifying and correcting hazards, calling out safe behaviors, elevating safety concerns in parking lots and work locations. They were recognized with an ice-cream party for the accomplishment.

The teams that support Environmental Programs deploy over 25 field vehicles daily across the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) to complete required characterization and monitoring scope, resulting in vehicle operation being one of the most dangerous activities these personnel face every day. The teams drive approximately 100k miles annually across the ORR and are on track to exceed that number this year, making efforts like this a priority for vehicle safety.

This vehicle safety challenge is one of many prevention efforts UCOR has had to attain having zero accidents. Safety challenges like this and more to come can help make this goal more possible every day.
