MSRE CPS team completes final Readiness Assessment

Published: 06/16/2026

Congratulations to UCOR’s Molten Salt Reactor Experiment team for successfully completing the final Continuous Purge System (CPS) Readiness Assessment.

CPS is an active safety upgrade that mitigates hazards and facilitates remote monitoring. Starting a new system is no small feat as the process is filled with many difficult requirements. Assessment members from across the DOE complex came to the facility to ensure nothing goes unchecked. Their reviews include processes, equipment, personnel, work plans, documentation, and even the team’s diligence in day-to-day operations.

“This has been years in the making, but thanks to the team’s dedication to seeing the project succeed, we successfully completed the final step before starting the new system,” said Sean Dunagan, Executive Vice President and Deputy Program Manager.

The ORNL Nuclear Operations team has completed numerous demonstrations, evaluations, drills, and interviews in preparation of this accomplishment.

“I am very proud of how tirelessly the team worked to make sure the necessary requirements, and documentation needs were met to operate the CPS safely and effectively,” said Jay Mullis,  Senior Vice President of Nuclear and Waste Management Operations.

This work being performed by UCOR positions ORNL for a long and successful future supporting ongoing science missions. Official start-up of the CPS is scheduled for August.
