Take Cover. A Take Cover protective action (Y-12 uses “Shelter for Severe Weather”)
is issued when a tornado or other threat has the potential to cause physical harm.
When you hear a take cover announcement, move to the nearest take cover location in a
strong, sturdy part of a building on the lowest level. Ideally, this is an interior, hard-walled
room or space away from windows and cubicles.
If no structure is available, move to a ditch or other low-lying area. Be careful to avoid
potential floodwater areas. Note that vehicles and temporary structures do not provide
protection during a tornado.
Shelter-in-Place. A Shelter-in-Place protective action ( Y-12
uses “Shelter for Hazardous Materials”) is issued when a
hazardous material plume is anticipated due to a release of
material that may result in harmful health effects.
Following a shelter-in-place announcement, (1) move into or remain indoors, (2) close
windows and doors, and (3) turn off heating, cooling, and ventilation systems to reduce
exposure to outside air.
If no structure is available, remain in a vehicle with the engine off and windows and
doors closed.
Both Take Cover locations and Shelter-in-Place instructions are provided in posted
Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for each UCOR-operated facility.
