The differences between Type I and II hard hats

UCOR is transitioning from the use of traditional Type I to Type II hard hats. What are some of the differences between these hard hats, and why is UCOR making this change?

• Type I hard hats are designed to reduce the force of an impact to the top of the head.
• Type II hard are designed to reduce the force of an impact to the front, back, sides, and top of the head.

Type II hard hats provide better protection, but what about the other differences?

Fit and comfort: A good fit is necessary for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to provide the right protection. With Type II hard hats gaining in use and popularity, new designs fit a wide variety of uses and needs.

Ventilation and heat stress: Most Type II hard hats are vented, where Type I hard hats are not. The increased ventilation in Type II hard hats help reduce the buildup of heat, improving worker comfort when performing work where ventilation is safe.

Weight and bulk: Type II hard hats have a much more robust suspension system, with padding on all sides to reduce impact. Advanced materials allow for increased padding without adding additional bulk or weight.

Chinstrap: The biggest difference between Type I and Type II hard hats is the addition of a chinstrap to the Type II hard hat. This chinstrap helps keep it in place when bending or working in tight spaces, or if an impact or fall occurs, which could save your life. Wearing a hard hat with a chinstrap is an adjustment, but advanced fastener systems make donning and doffing very simple.

The transition is especially important because slips, trips, and falls remain UCOR’s leading injury type. While no single piece of personal protective equipment can eliminate risk, providing workers with equipment that stays in place and protects against lateral impacts adds another layer of defense when unexpected falls occur.
