Training and Conduct of Operations

Training and conduct of operations (ConOps) are vital for preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. They are integral to the successful implementation of UCOR’s Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) and the ability to maintain our DOE Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star site status.

Effective training:
• Provides knowledge and skills required to safely and efficiently perform work • Enhances the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to hazards
• Promotes effective implementation of protective controls

ConOps practices:
• Minimize the likelihood of human fallibility
• Reduce the severity of consequences associated with human, technical, systematic, and organizational failures

Training coupled with ConOps practices also improve employee morale, create a strong safety culture, and enhance quality and productivity.

Before starting new, as well as routine work activities, consider the following:
1. Have I and others in my group completed necessary training?
2. Do I completely understand the task, and did the training equip me with the knowledge and skills required to safely perform the activity?
3. How can I help new team members or those who are less familiar with the task?
4. What will I do if the task can’t be performed exactly as prescribed by work controls?
5. What can go wrong and how will I respond?
