To the UCOR Workforce:
UCOR has embarked on the next chapter of cleanup that is opening opportunities at ORNL’s central campus. On Monday, we began demolishing the first of ten isotope research and production facilities, known collectively as Isotope Row. In addition to eliminating the risk posed by these aging structures, demolishing them frees up approximately 12,000 square feet of space. This project is yet another example of how our cleanup work supports science and national defense missions as we remove excess and often dilapidated structures across the Oak Ridge Reservation.
As with all work that we perform, we are approaching this project with safety and efficiency as top priorities. Because of the tight space, we have sequenced demolition of the individual buildings to ensure no cross contamination occurs. Crews are also working outside of ORNL’s operating hours to avoid impacting ORNL mission work close to the footprint.
I’d like to thank everyone involved in preparing these buildings for demolition, from our functional staff that supports the workforce to the operations and D&D crews who implement it. I’d also like to thank the crew that safely kicked off the work this week. Your dedication to excellence is making a huge difference at DOE’s largest multiprogram national laboratory.
