The Waste Management team at the Oak Ridge Reservation Landfill (ORRL) recently completed removing accumulated fine soil particles (sediment) and reconstructing the Pond 2 forebay. Every couple of years, clean out is required to maintain the necessary pond capacity and functionality.
Crews removed 85 truckloads of sediment from the pond and placed in an area to be dried for reuse as cover material at ORRL.
“Reusing material that otherwise would be disposed of is beneficial because it saves clean cover material and supports waste minimization,” said Martin Cooper, ORRL Operations Manager.
Following clean out, the team used 73 truckloads of clean soil to rebuild the floor. Workers placed approximately 200 tons of riprap stones to rebuild the forebay berm wall to support erosion control. Pond 2 is now back in full operation and filtering sediments as intended.
