UCOR’s Industrial Hygiene (IH) team came up with an innovative way to strengthen worker safety while improving efficiency through a new initiative that brings equipment manufacturers directly to Oak Ridge work sites each month.
Rather than relying solely on consulting instruction manuals or shipping equipment off-site for troubleshooting, IH professionals have created a unique opportunity for fieldworkers to meet face-to-face with manufacturers to ask questions and learn practical techniques to apply directly to the projects. These discussions help industrial hygienists learn how to fix the instruments themselves, reducing delays and avoiding unnecessary repair costs while enabling support of DOE’s cleanup mission.
This year, our Industrial Hygiene professionals have brought Sensidyne, MSA, Drager, SlateSafety, Honeywell, GFG, SKC Inc., and TSI Incorporated to various work sites.
These efforts have cut the three-to-five-month lost instrumentation time to just two to four weeks. Over time, the company will see savings of tens of thousands of dollars in yearly calibration and maintenance costs, as well as daily project costs due to lost time in the field.
