[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The Mental Wellbeing Center hosted an open-discussion workshop on suicide awareness and prevention yesterday. Joined by the Thrive team, Kenneth Williams shared professional insights and personal experiences before opening up conversation with attendees.

Questions from 25 engaged guests addressed important topics such as the reasons for high suicide rates among construction workers, why suicide deaths are more prevalent among men, survivor guilt, and passive suicide versus suicidal ideation.  Group discussion also covered ways to get engaged: recognizing early warning signs, starting conversations that connect, and how to get help and support.

September 14-18 is recognized as Construction Suicide Prevention Awareness Week. Unfortunately, the construction industry experiences the second highest rate of suicides compared to all other industries. The rate has dropped slightly, but we still have work to do. Recent reports still show over 5,000 lives lost to suicide per year in our industry alone.

Evidence shows that even the smallest conversations can make a difference. Be a great wingman! Check in on your coworkers by simply providing encouragement, support, and a listening ear.
