Throwback Thursday – Bulk Shielding Reactor demolition

Published: 10/29/2026

UCOR crews made history when they began demolishing the Bulk Shielding Reactor at ORNL, the first former reactor ever torn down at the site. It was originally built in the 1950s for radiation shielding studies. Demolition kicked off in 2022 after the team completed hazard reduction work, including the drainage of the 27‑foot‑deep shielding pool. The reactor’s removal marked a major milestone in clearing infrastructure from the center of ORNL to continue to open more possibilities for modern campus redevelopment.
