Recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies show that workers in the construction industry have some of the highest rates of substance abuse and overdose deaths in the U.S. —three times the rate of other industries.
The Center for Construction Research and Training reports that although construction workers accounting for only 8% of the U.S. workforce, 17% of all overdoses in the working population are suffered by these workers. Substance abuse affects nearly 1 in 5 members of the construction workforce, which is twice the national average. Multiple factors, including physical strain, high-stress work environments, and mental health challenges contribute to these unusually high rates within the construction industry.
Substance misuse and abuse threaten overall wellbeing and the ability to be mission ready. These behaviors can have profound impacts on physical, mental, and emotional health. They may also lead to long-term complications like cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cognitive decline, and mental health disorders.
